Farming Practices

Art, Science and Alchemy
First Light Farm is a certified organic farm which means that we are verified by a third-party inspection service. We are certified by Marin Organic Certified Agriculture, which is a local Marin county agency that certifies growers in Marin and Sonoma counties.  We are proud to be Certified Organic because it is no easy thing to get all the paper work together and document all of our practices, it makes us better farmers and better business owners.  However we do not stop with the certification as a standard of good farming practices.  We hold ourselves to a higher standard and are continually learning and innovating our practices to work with the natural systems we love so much.
We continually plant both winter and spring cover crops to build soil fertility, improve soil structure, soil life and add organic matter.
We apply organic compost that feeds diverse life in the soil. These beneficial bacteria, fungi, insects, worms and more support healthy plant growth.
We use lab-based soil testing to evaluate and balance soil nutrients.
We build biodynamic compost and spray biodynamic preparations created out of natural and organic substances which are used to enhance and regulate plant growth, soil life and farm metabolism. The preparations help to connect the life and systems of our farm to the life and systems of the universe that it is completely enmeshed in.
We practice careful crop rotations so that the nutritional demands of crops do not over-tax soil nutrients and pest/disease pressure is minimized. For example, our potatoes and brassicas are on a 4-year rotation cycle and are never grown in the same field until 4 years have passed.
We utilize the ancient practice of dry-farming at our Valley Ford operation, carefully tending the soil to grow the best potatoes and winter squash you will ever taste without a single drop of irrigated water!
